4 Days Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley

Your 4 day desert tour from Marrakech begins with a morning pickup from your hotel or riad. We’ll leave the city behind and travel through the High Atlas Mountains, following a scenic road with panoramic views of mountain peaks, valleys, and small villages. Along the way, we’ll cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass and stop at suitable viewpoints to take photos and enjoy the mountain scenery.

Our first major visit is Ait Ben Haddou, a historic fortified village recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through its narrow streets, admire the traditional clay architecture, and discover why this famous kasbah has been used as a filming location for international movies and television productions. After the visit, we’ll continue to Ouarzazate, often called the gateway to the Sahara, where you’ll have time for lunch.

In the afternoon, we’ll travel through the Skoura palm grove and the Rose Valley, an area known for its green palm trees, traditional kasbahs, and small settlements. As we continue toward the Dades Valley, the scenery changes to dramatic rock formations and rugged mountain landscapes. We’ll arrive at your hotel in the evening, where you can enjoy dinner and relax overnight.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, we’ll leave the Dades Valley and continue toward Todra Gorge, one of the most impressive natural attractions in southern Morocco. Its towering limestone cliffs rise above a narrow river corridor, creating a striking landscape. You’ll have time to walk through part of the gorge, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and take photos before continuing the journey.

We’ll then drive through the towns of Touroug and Tinjdad, passing traditional villages, palm groves, and open desert landscapes. As we approach Merzouga, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi become more visible, marking our arrival near the Sahara Desert. This part of the journey offers a wonderful contrast to the mountains and valleys visited earlier in the tour.

In the afternoon, prepare for one of the highlights of this Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour: a camel ride across the Sahara dunes. Follow the sandy trails toward your desert camp and watch the sunset as the colors of the dunes gradually change. At the camp, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner followed by Berber music around the fire. Spend the night in the Sahara, surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of the desert.

Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate

Wake up early to experience sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes, when the morning light creates beautiful colors across the sand. After breakfast at the camp, return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4, according to your arrangements, and continue the journey with your driver.

Our next stop is Rissani, a historic town known for its traditional market and long-standing role in regional trade. If the market is open on the day of your visit, you can explore its stalls and discover local goods, spices, and everyday products. Rissani also offers a glimpse into the traditions and daily life of communities in southeastern Morocco.

From Rissani, we’ll continue toward the Draa Valley, one of Morocco’s best-known palm-growing regions. The route passes extensive palm groves, traditional villages, and old kasbahs that reflect the area’s history along historic caravan routes. There will be opportunities to enjoy the scenery and take photos along the way before continuing to Ouarzazate.

We’ll arrive in Ouarzazate later in the day, where you can check into your hotel, enjoy dinner, and rest after another scenic drive through southern Morocco.

Day 4: Ouarzazate – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech

After breakfast, we’ll have some time to explore Ouarzazate before starting the return drive to Marrakech. Depending on the schedule, you may visit Atlas Studios or explore a nearby historic kasbah. Ouarzazate is known for its film industry, traditional architecture, and position between the Atlas Mountains and the desert regions.

We’ll then travel north through the High Atlas Mountains, passing small mountain villages and enjoying the changing views along the road. After crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, we’ll descend toward Marrakech, where the mountain scenery gradually gives way to the busy streets and neighborhoods of the city.

Upon arrival, your driver will drop you off at your hotel or riad, bringing your 4 days Sahara Desert tour from Marrakech to an end. You’ll return with memories of ancient kasbahs, dramatic valleys, the golden dunes of Merzouga, and a night beneath the Sahara sky.
