From Casablanca
If you have one week and want a broad first look at the country, the 8 Days Morocco Itinerary from Casablanca below does the job well. The route climbs from the Atlantic coast through Rabat, Meknes, and Fes, crosses the Middle Atlas to the Sahara dunes at Merzouga, then swings back over the High Atlas to Marrakech. Everything runs in one private vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide, so you never juggle trains, buses, or taxis.
Journeys to Morocco is a Marrakech-based travel company, and we run this tour as a private journey. Local guides take over in Fes and Marrakech, and our team answers on WhatsApp and email before and during your trip. Below you’ll find the full day-by-day plan, real driving distances, and the practical details most itineraries skip.
When you arrive at Mohammed V International Airport, your driver will be waiting to take you to Rabat. If you’re already in Casablanca, pickup can be arranged at your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you may be able to stop at Hassan II Mosque before leaving the city.
Once in Rabat, visit Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, two important sites in the capital. You can also walk through the Kasbah of the Oudayas, where quiet lanes and white-and-blue houses overlook the river. After your visits, check into your hotel and settle in for the night.
After breakfast, leave Rabat and head inland to Meknes. Take a walk around Bab Mansour and explore part of the old medina, where everyday life moves at a slower pace than in Morocco larger cities.
From Meknes, continue to Volubilis. The site is spread across open countryside, with Roman-era columns, old buildings, and mosaics still visible among the ruins. Take time to explore before getting back on the road to Fes. When you arrive, your riad will be your base for the night.
Fes is best explored on foot, especially inside its old medina. With a local guide, you’ll walk through narrow lanes lined with small shops, food stalls, and workshops that have served local residents for generations.
During the tour, visit Bou Inania Madrasa and explore the historic area around Al Quaraouiyine. You’ll also pass through the souks and see craftspeople working with leather, metal, and other materials. At the Chouara Tanneries, you can observe the traditional process used to treat and dye leather from a nearby terrace. After the tour, return to your riad or spend the rest of the day exploring at your own pace.
Today, you’ll leave the city behind and travel toward the Sahara. The road passes through the Middle Atlas Mountains, with a stop in Ifrane before continuing toward the cedar forest near Azrou. If you’re lucky, you may spot Barbary macaques in the trees along the way.
After passing through Midelt, continue south toward the Ziz Valley. Palm groves and small villages appear along the river before the landscape becomes drier as you approach Merzouga. The Erg Chebbi dunes mark your arrival at the edge of the Sahara.
Depending on your package, you’ll ride a camel to your desert camp or take a 4×4 transfer. Once there, enjoy dinner and spend the evening at camp. The desert can get cold after sunset, particularly in winter, so bring a warm layer for the night.
If you’re up early, head out to watch the sunrise over the dunes before breakfast. Then leave Merzouga for Rissani, a town with a long history of trade in the Tafilalet region. If the timing works, you may have a chance to look around the local market before continuing west.
The road leads toward Todra Gorge near Tinghir. Here, you can get out, stretch your legs, and walk between the tall rock walls that line the valley. Continue to Dades Valley, where the scenery changes to winding roads, rocky hills, and small settlements. Check into your hotel and enjoy dinner before settling in for the night.
After breakfast, leave Dades Valley and make your way toward Ouarzazate. The drive passes through dry valleys and small towns, with views of traditional kasbahs along the way. Ouarzazate is a useful stop to learn about the region’s film industry and its role as a gateway between the desert and the mountains.
Next, visit Ait Ben Haddou, a historic settlement made up of earthen buildings grouped behind defensive walls. Walk through its narrow passages and explore the old village, which has appeared in several film and television productions.
From there, continue across the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. The road winds through mountain villages and offers places to stop for photos when conditions allow. Arrive in Marrakech later in the day and check into your riad.
Spend the day getting to know Marrakech with a local guide. Start near Koutoubia Mosque, then continue to Bahia Palace, where courtyards and decorated rooms show the detail of traditional Moroccan craftsmanship. Visit the Saadian Tombs before heading into the old medina.
The souks are a good place to see how local trade works, with stalls selling spices, leather goods, textiles, and handmade items. Your guide can help you find your way through the busy lanes and explain the different crafts along the route. Later, visit Jemaa el-Fnaa, where food stalls and street performers draw crowds as the day goes on.
The afternoon is yours to enjoy. You can browse the shops, take a break at a rooftop café, or return to the square in the evening. Overnight in Marrakech.
After breakfast, your driver will take you to Marrakech airport. If you’re flying home from Casablanca, a transfer to the airport. Your 8 days Morocco itinerary from Casablanca ends.
The price depends on your travel dates, hotel level, camp choice, and group size. A private tour for two costs more per person than one for four or more. Entrance fees and lunches cost extra. Contact us with your dates and group size, and we send a quote.
Most travelers manage it well. If you have back or mobility concerns, we can arrange a 4x4 ride to the desert camp instead. Both options reach the dunes for sunset.
The tour visits Hassan II Mosque, Habous Quarter, Hassan Tower, Oudaya Kasbah, Bab Mansour, Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, Volubilis ruins, Chouara Tannery, Ait Ben Haddou, Kasbah Telouet, Todra Gorges, and Dades Valley. Guided tours provide cultural and historical insights, allowing travelers to appreciate Morocco Islamic, Roman, and Berber heritage in depth.
Bring comfortable walking shoes, lightweight clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. A warm jacket is useful for evenings in the Sahara, particularly during winter. If you plan to explore the medinas, comfortable shoes will make walking on uneven streets easier.
