Planning a 4 days trip from Marrakech to Fes? This route skips the fast highway and loops through the south instead. You cross the High Atlas, drop into the Sahara, and climb back north to the imperial city of Fes. One night in a desert camp sits at the center of the trip.

Your driver-guide meets you at your Marrakech riad or hotel after breakfast. Within a couple of hours, the plains give way to switchbacks, and the road begins to climb. At the Tizi n’Tichka pass, near 2,260 meters (7,400 feet), the air turns cooler and thinner. Pull-offs along the way let you photograph red-earth villages and terraced fields.
Ait Ben Haddou is the main stop of the day. This cluster of mud-brick houses climbs a hill above a river, and UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 1987. Directors have used it as a film set for Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia. Wear shoes with good grip, because the lanes are steep and uneven.
Next, the route reaches Ouarzazate, a town with large film studios on its edge. Beyond it, the road passes the palm oasis of Skoura and the rose-growing district around Kalaat M’Gouna. You arrive in the Dades Valley in the evening and sleep there. Count on 6 to 7 hours of driving, plus stops.
Day two starts early because the dunes are still far away. The vehicle follows the valley road east to the Todra Gorges, where limestone walls rise about 300 meters (nearly 1,000 feet) on both sides. The canyon narrows so much that the river path stays cool even at midday. Walk along the Todra River or take a short hike. Then eat lunch nearby or in Erfoud.
From Erfoud, a straight desert road leads to Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. After a rest at your hotel, you climb onto a camel in the late afternoon. The animals walk in single file, and the ride to camp takes about an hour. You reach the tents as the light fades. Dinner and a campfire follow, and in clear weather the sky fills with stars. Expect 4 to 5 hours of driving today.
Your guide wakes you before dawn so you can watch the sunrise from the dunes. The sand shifts from pale pink to orange within minutes. Then you ride back to Merzouga, shower at your hotel, and sit down to a Moroccan breakfast.
Later, you drive to Khamlia, a small village where local musicians play Gnawa music. After that, you spend time with Berber nomad families and hear how they live with so little water. Depending on recent rain, you may also see Dayet Srji, a lake that fills only in wet years. Lunch often means a Berber pizza baked in a family home. This day involves very little driving. Use it to rest, take photos, and ask your guide about desert life.
Day four brings the longest drive, so you leave early. The road follows the Ziz Valley, where palm groves fill the riverbed below rocky slopes. Then it climbs into the Middle Atlas. Near Azrou, you stop at a cedar forest that shelters wild Barbary macaques. You reach Fes in the evening, and your driver drops you at your accommodation.
By highway, the two cities sit about 330 miles (530 km) apart, roughly 8 hours by car. This route swings south through the Atlas and the Sahara first, so it covers more than 600 miles (about 1,000 km). Four days gives every stop enough time and lets you sleep in the desert.
